Adcor Defense

Adcor Defense

The Adcor Defense Company was one of the contenders in the US Army Individual Carbine Competition to replace the M4 Carbine. The Individual Carbine competition was cancelled before a winner was chosen. On 17 July 2013, Adcor Defense announced it would not protest the Army's decision to terminate the program. The company will instead focus on providing the ADCOR A-556 ELITE to commercial customers for sporting and hunting. Adcor also emphasized that it is willing to support weapon improvement programs in the U.S. military, including the M4 Product Improvement Program (PIP) and any future calls for designs for new rifles.

Advanced Armament Corporation

Advanced Armament Corporation

Kevin Brittingham founded Advanced Armament Corporation in 1994 to manufacture sound suppressors, having previously been a distributor for GEMTECH, another suppressor manufacturer. Under Brittingham's direction, AAC grew to be one of the largest suppressor manufacturers in the U.S., including a number of small military contracts. Of note, one of AAC's chief suppressor designers is Robert Silvers, creator of the PhotoMosaic. In 2009, Brittingham sold the company to Remington Arms. Robert Silvers remained at the company as a leader of research and development. In early 2015 AAC moved locations from Lawrenceville, GA to a new, larger, state of the art facility located in Huntsville, AL.

Anschutz

Anschutz

The first trademark of the newly-founded company was round in character. This was probably only because Julius Gottfried Anschütz strongly stylised the "G" of his second Christian name, almost making a "C" out of it, and then interweaved it with his other two initials "J", a stylised "I", and an oversized "A". This signet soon led to the Germania weapons factory in Zella-Mehlis mostly being referred to concisely as "IGA". And Dieter Anschütz often relates that his schoolmates and childhood friends in Zella-Mehlis often just called out "IG" to him. The selection of a circular company logo also probably had a practical background. Because every firearm needs to have a manufacturer's stamp, this clear and distinct shape lends itself to being effectively applied even to the smallest of stamping punches. You can still clearly see this punch mark on many old firearms even today.

Auto Ordnance

Auto Ordnance

General John T. Thompson, a graduate of West Point, began his research in 1915 for an automatic weapon to supply the American military. World War I was dragging on and casualties were mounting. Having served in the Army's ordnance supplies and logistics, General Thompson understood that greater firepower was needed to end the war.Thompson was driven to create a lightweight, fully automatic firearm that would be effective against the contemporary machine gun. His idea was "a one-man, hand held machine gun. A trench broom!" The first shipment of Thompson prototypes arrived on the dock in New York for shipment to Europe on November 11, 1918, the day that the War ended. In 1919, Thompson directed Auto Ordnance to modify the gun for nonmilitary use. The gun, classified a "submachine gun" to denote a small, hand-held, fully automatic firearm chambered for pistol ammunition, was officially named the "Thompson submachine gun" to honor the man most responsible for its creation. With military and police sales low, Auto Ordnance sold its submachine guns through every legal outlet it could. A Thompson submachine gun could be purchased either by mail order, or from the local hardware or sporting goods store.
