Designed from 1895 by Col. Nariakira Arisaka (who later was appointed Baron) who led a commission to design a rifle to replace old and outdated rifles, the rifle was designed as a replacement to the old and expensive Type 22 rifle and entered service the same year. The rifle was designated "Type 30" as it entered service in the 30th year of Emperor Meiji's reign, 1897. The standard infantry rifle of Imperial Japan from 1899 to around 1905, when the Type 38 was introduced. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with the untouched mum and "3/10/Type" markings on the front receiver ring, serial number and Tokyo Arsenal stamps on the receiver wall, and a Siamese stamp on the rear bridge. No provision for a dust cover is provided. Fitted with a smooth pistol grip stock.
