Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 Features

The Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 is one of many SMLE variants, this one designed to be easier, faster and cheaper to produce.  This rifle includes a cock-on-close bolt action design that is rarely seen in most other firearms, however the rear aperture sight can flip up for a ranged ladder sight.  This rifle is built with the standard-length 25.2 inch barrel and has a 2-piece stock similar to other Enfield rifles.

Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 Capacity

The No4 Mk1 is chambered in .303 British and feeds from a 10 round double-stack magazine.  While these magazines can be removed, the poor manufacturing tolerances required hand fitting so magazines are typically rifle-specific.  Rounds can be loaded one-by-one into the magazine by removing the mag or feeding them through the receiver, or the magazine can be loaded with up to 2 5-round stripper clips.

Measuring 44.5 inches long with an unloaded weight of 9 pounds, the No4 Mk1 is as easy to carry as all other standard infantry rifles in WWII’s European theater.  This rifle’s mobility score gets bonus points for its fire-and-maneuver capabilities surpassing other bolt actions thanks to its faster action and 10 round magazine.

Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The No4 Mk1 is designed with a bolt handle that sits behind the trigger which, arguably, increases the potential fire rate for the user along with the cock-on-close action.  Instead of an up-back-forward-down bolt stroke, it’s a more simplified up-and-back/foward-and-down bolt throw.  The magazine release sits forward of the trigger inside the trigger guard, and the safety is located near the back of the bolt along the left side of the receiver.

Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 Fit & Finish

The No4 Mk1 has a much rougher factory surface finish than most other Lee Enfield rifles due to RSAF’s efforts to produce a rifle that was cheaper, faster and easier to manufacture.  As long as the rifle hasn’t been sporterized, an all-too-common crime against history, the rifles retain their historical value and thus their resale value.
