The MG34 was developed by Rheinmetall in Germany from 1928 to 1934 and was quickly adopted into multiple roles due to its light weight and overall design. It was named as a universal machine gun due to its ability to be mounted on aircraft, vehicles and tripods while it is also light enough to be employed as a light machine gun with no modifications. Man-portable with the ability to be fired from the shoulder and with a fire rate around 900 rounds per minute, the MG34 was considered to be the most advanced automatic weapon at the time of its adoption.

MG 34 Features

The MG34 is a belt-fed light machine gun that operates on a short-recoil action with a 4-lug rotating barrel.  It can expel semi-automatic fire by pulling the top of the trigger, and you can ride the lightning by pulling the trigger with two fingers where you will engage the smaller trigger leaf that keeps the sear out of the bolt’s travel.  The MG34 has a 24.7 inch barrel topped with a dual-sight system with low-profile iron sights offset from the barrel and flip-up, range-adjustable iron sights over the bore axis.

MG 34 Capacity

The MG34 is chambered in 8x57mm Mauser and feeds from 250-round ammo belts with non-disintegrating links.  These belts were carried by the gunner, assistant gunner and the other members of the machine gun squad in steel ammo boxes.  A 75-round drum-shaped belt container, that often gets mistaken for a drum magazine, was also developed for use with infantry.

With an unloaded weight of 26.7 pounds and an overall length of 48 inches, the MG34 could easily be deployed into a firing position.  Due to its high rate of fire, the weight of the gun and the weight of the ammo, the MG34 would be deployed with a machine gun crew of at least 2 soldiers with the most common squad size consisting of 4 or 5 men.

MG 34 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The MG34 is designed with an in-line stock placing the user’s shoulder in line with the barrel and while this increases felt recoil, it improves controllability.  The pistol grip sits at a 60 degree angle and the two-finger trigger has an enlarged trigger guard to accommodate two fingers, even with gloves on.  The charging handle is non-reciprocating and is located on the right side of the receiver.

MG 34 Fit & Finish

The MG34 is built on a milled receiver with the majority of its parts being stamped and parkerized.  This gun had an interesting development cycle that included a rate-reducing mechanism in the grip that allowed the user to easily adjust the rate of fire between 400 and 900 rounds per minute, and the Luftwaffe wanted it to fire faster.  It was eventually decided to make all of them fire at 900 RPM to simplify the design.
